Sample Resume | How to Write an Effective Resume

   Sample resume: A well written resume highlights professionalism and effectively communicates to potential employers your career focus, past experiences, education, qualifications and skills related to the content and functions of the position you apply for. An effective resume is one that communicates to employers that you are the most qualified to fill their specific need.

       Although your resume may not be a basis for employer in making their decisions, it is important to put in mind that a well written resume gets you one step closer to your aspired position by getting you an interview. During your job search, it is very important to review some sample resumes to study them to learn how to effectively promote yourself and your credentials to prospective employers. A well written sample resume is focused on content and composition that highlights strengths and career goals.

Sample Resume – What to Include

What you include in your resume will paint an image of you that will often lead your interviewers’ questions. Prepare to talk about them and explain everything clearly.  A resume has the following parts:

1. Identifying Information:

  • Your name,
  • Present and Permanent Addresses,
  • Landline and cell phone number,
  • E-mail address.

Please take note that:

Email addresses must be appropriate for work and related transactions. The best way to format your professional email address is to include your whole name or a combination of initials and surname. For example:, or

Avoid indicating an informal email address that reflects unprofessionalism such as:

Other details such as marital status, gender, religion, height, weight, political affiliation, and other similar information can be omitted.

2. Summary of Qualifications:

     On some sample resumes, many applicants include a summary statement, a short list of key strengths and experiences, at the beginning of their resume, instead of a “Career Objective” so employers can get a snapshot of their strengths in the first few lines. But on some sample resumes, usually, “Career Objective” will do the work as long as its contents are straightforward to the position applied for.

3. Education:

  • Your institution’s name
  • Degree(s)
  • The month and year you expect to or did receive your degree.
  • Major and Minor.
  • Include special programs of study, such as study abroad
  • Include honors and awards.


4. Work Experience: 

This is one of the most important content areas on your resume wherein details become a priority. Carefully review your previous positions and accurately describe them.

  • Your full-time work experience,
  • Your part-time work experience,
  • Your non-paid experiences such as Internships, community service positions and some undergraduate leadership positions.

Consider asking yourself the following questions to be able to come up with the most important details:

  • What were your job responsibilities?
  • What skills did you develop?
  • What decisions did you make?
  • Did you produce any written documents or reports?
  • Can you quantify the results of your work?
  • What were your major accomplishment(s)?

Please take note:

Read the job offered description and select your experiences that highlight your relevant skills. Your experiences should aim at the employer’s needs and how these make you fit for the job content and functions.

5. Co-Curricular Activities:

Your involvement in organizations can demonstrate a span of background that is attractive to many employers. Include those that highlight a desirable skill, interest, or leadership trait.

For example, professional certifications and affiliations

6. Skills:

List down all the relevant skills that you possess:

  • Language proficiency (i.e. Proficient in English and Filipino, written and verbal),
  • Computer knowledge (i.e. use of various computer applications)

Be honest about your proficiency in any of the skills you listed. Your interviewer might ask you to elaborate or demonstrate them and it’s not good if you’re not able to perform with the level that you claim to be.

7. Interests:

Listing your interests can help spark conversation with an interviewer to get to know you better. List interests that distinguish you, catch the eye of the recruiter, or demonstrate a trait you know the employer will value.


8. References

Include at least two key persons you have worked with, worked for or any person on authority who could serve as a basis for performance and character for a background check. Make sure you have informed them regarding your application and as much as possible, provide a copy of sample resume for them.
